I am a licensed psychotherapist specializing in depression, anxiety, relationship issues, eating disorders and body image problems. I have worked in private practice for many years and as a consulting therapist with The Eating Disorder Resource Center in New York.
I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University as well as advanced study in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. This training informs the way I work and it has taught me to appreciate the formative role our early life and family experience play in our emotional and psychological development.
I work in an interactive way with my patients, encouraging them to be curious about and interested in exploring their thoughts and feelings. I see adults and couples and have experience with older adolescents, especially in the area of eating disorders. I also do group psychotherapy.
Despite my belief in the importance of early family life, I work actively with my patients’ current experiences and relationships, including the therapeutic one. Together, we explore the problems that bring them to therapy, with an eye toward recognizing and gradually lessening the ways in which those problems have compromised the quality of their lives. I encourage them to pay attention to both their conscious experience and to those feelings and beliefs that are out of their awareness. In fact, the philosophy behind my therapeutic work is that the therapist, in her role as a warm and caring person, actively engaged with her patient in the present, can help to bring about significant and lasting change.
I have unfailing confidence in the healing powers of the psychotherapeutic process, having experienced it both professionally and personally. When the fit between patient and therapist is constructive and comfortable, the process can provide lasting relief from long-standing emotional struggle and make it possible to lead a more contented and fulfilled life.
